What Makes Þórsmörk So Special for Elopements
Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) is a hidden valley between glaciers in the Icelandic Highlands. It’s wild, remote, and only accessible by Superjeep, which already makes it one of the best places to elope in Iceland if you’re looking for something off the beaten path.
As an Iceland wedding photographer, I’ve explored a lot of stunning locations, but Þórsmörk hits differently. There’s something ancient and sacred about it. The kind of place where nature feels alive and your elopement becomes more than a ceremony… it becomes a story.
Real Adventure Elopement in Þórsmörk: L&M
L&M booked a two-day adventure elopement in Iceland, and while we visited a few iconic spots along the South Coast, Þórsmörk stole the show.
With the help of our awesome guide from Midgard Adventure, we crossed countless rivers in a super jeep, finally reaching the mossy canyon deep in the valley. The autumn light was golden, the forest glowed with warm tones, and the air was perfectly still.
We hiked up Valahnúkur, a short but steep trail with an insane payoff. From the top, you get 360º views over the glaciers, braided rivers, and wild valleys. We shared Icelandic pastries and hot tea at the summit, completely alone. Just us, nature, and the feeling that time had stopped.
On the drive back, L played Something in the Orange by Zach Bryan. That moment still gives me chills.
Some couples you just click with and L&M were one of those. Intimate, fun, kind. The kind of day that reminds me why I do this.

Þórsmörk Engagement Session with M&K
We came back to Þórsmörk in summer for an Iceland engagement session with M&K. This time it rained lightly, but these two are absolute legends: brave, sweet and adventurous as hell.
They wore minimalist black and white sweaters that matched the mood of the valley. We climbed back to Valahnúkur and were rewarded with lush green views and bright glacial rivers cutting through the landscape. Honestly, it became one of my favorite couple sessions ever.
Instead of taking the same trail back, we descended toward Volcano Huts, where our Midgard guide picked us up on the other side with their super jeep.
Oh! and they’re coming back this October to elope with us. When couples return for their wedding, it’s the biggest compliment a photographer can get.

How to Plan a Þórsmörk Elopement
Getting There (and Why You Need a Superjeep)
Þórsmörk is only accessible with a super jeep and an expert local guide. The F-roads involve multiple river crossings and change constantly based on weather. We always recommend traveling with trusted locals (like Midgard Adventure) who know how to keep everyone safe and relaxed.
When to Go
Summer (June - August): Green landscapes, longer days
Autumn (September - early October): Golden colors, soft light, fewer people
What to Pack
Waterproof layers
Good hiking boots
Snacks and water
Gloves and hat (always!)
A small speaker (for that Zach Bryan moment)
Is Þórsmörk Right for Your Iceland Elopement?
Þórsmörk is perfect if:
You love hiking, forests and dramatic views
You want a remote, intimate ceremony far from tourists
You’re open to a bit of adventure (mud, wind, rivers…)
If you're looking for easier access or have mobility needs, there are other beautiful spots I’d love to recommend that feel just as magical.
Why We Love Working With Midgard Adventure
We don’t do big ads or promotions, but when a local partner truly enhances the experience, they deserve a shoutout.
Midgard Adventure is more than just a adventure travel company. Their guides are storytellers, locals who love this land and professionals who know how to turn a wild place like Þórsmörk into a dream experience for our couples.
Valahnúkur Hike INFO
If you’re up for a short but rewarding hike during your elopement or adventure session in Þórsmörk, Valahnúkur is an incredible choice. It’s one of the best panoramic viewpoints in the Icelandic Highlands, and it’s totally worth the effort.
📌 Quick facts:
Distance (loop): ~2.5 km
Elevation gain: ~120 meters
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Time: Around 1 hour round trip (depending on pace and photo stops)
Start point: Básar huts or Volcano Huts
Trail type: Circular with steep sections, but well marked
From the top, you’ll get a 360° view over Þórsmörk Valley, Gígjökull Glacier, and the surrounding volcanic ridges. On clear days, you can even spot parts of the Laugavegur trail in the distance.
This hike is short enough to include during an elopement day, but it still feels like a real adventure. Hiking boots are a must, and weather can change fast, so always dress in layers.
