The first time I laid eyes on a photo of Múlagljúfur Canyon, I instantly fell in love. It became clear to me that, sooner or later, the three of us would go on a journey to explore it together. As always, before setting off on any excursion, be it in Iceland or anywhere else, proper preparation is absolutely essential. We sought out information about the route, and although we discovered that it was family-friendly, there wasn't much else available about the specifics of the place, leaving us unsure and excited about what to expect.
In Iceland, it's quite common to make plans for the weekend, only to have them dashed by horrible weather conditions. However, this time, luck was on our side, and the Icelandic gods granted us the opportunity to venture out and enjoy the hike.
The trek to Múlagljúfur Canyon and its breathtaking waterfalls proved to be fairly easy and suitable for hikers of all levels. It’s also very affordable! The beauty of it, and what I say is the coolest part, is that you don't have to reach the canyon's end to witness the majestic waterfalls and capture the best views. This means that everyone can turn back whenever they wish! Nevertheless, it's important to bear in mind the following information and consider whether you are fully prepared for the rugged and mountainous terrain typical of Iceland:
•The hike is categorized as easy to moderate.
•The duration is approximately one hour for a round trip to the viewpoint.
•There are no markings or signs indicating the trail (this is where GPS comes in handy).
•Parking is free.
•You'll need to cross a small river.
With that being said, we'd like to share some images from the day we ventured on this incredible hike. Being Iceland wedding photographers, we're passionate about capturing special moments in the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland. As you can see, having Emma in the hiking backpack didn't pose any complications at all. We encourage you to embark on amazing journeys with your little ones whenever possible but always prioritize safety. Remember to check the weather beforehand (visit www.vedur.is in Iceland) and carry extra warm clothing, water, food, and a fully charged cell phone with a battery pack in your backpack. Additionally, we highly recommend bringing a GPS device, as many routes in Iceland are unmarked.
